The Study Center of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto had architects developing structures for Portuguese higher education institutions created in 1973, and among which we researched: the plan for the University of Aveiro (1987-2015) and the ensemble of the buildings of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (1989-2010).
The plan for the AU was coordinated by the architect Nuno Portas and had collaborating architects Joaquim Oliveira, Lucio Parente, Maria Manuel Oliveira and Teresa Fonseca. The second, for IPV, was coordinated by the architect Sergio Fernandez and had a team of architects formed by the collaborators Joaquim Oliveira and José Luis de Jesus Gomes.
These plans and architectures are related to the critical revision of Modern Architecture in the European context, especially of university equipment, and which had a theoretical initiative by the publication of the article “The university in the city: architectural problems and insertion in the urban space” by architects José Pedro Martins Barata and Nuno Portas. This article was the only one that approached the subject of architecture present in the compilation of articles by Adérito Sedas Nunes under the title “The university in Portuguese life”, a work published in two volumes in 1969.
In this context, the idea of “public space as the structure of projects”, or “floor project” is specially developed in these projects, as well as the adoption of the “interdepartmental model” and that from 1973, until today, overlapped the former college organization.
